Norwegian painter Bjorn Wefring works in a grand expressionistic style, giving landscapes an enveloping emotional and experiential texture. Trained in Norway, Sweden and New York, Wefring brings an expertly honed sense of depth to his landscapes through his mode of built-up application. Carved from layers of oil with knives, scrapes and other tools, he balances harsh and serene registers to give a multifaceted sense of nature and space. His style of leveled application, combined with cutting and scraping, brings his landscapes into relief.

Whether depicting looming mountains in stark mid-winter tones, or the dry, languid planes of rosy summer afternoons, Wefring invites viewers into seasonal landscapes with an expertly composed mix of horizontal and diagonal compositions. Booming skies glide flatly over gently sloping hills, stark plains and treacherous mountains, placing the viewer (often represented by a gazing character within the painting) in the position of a spectator to nature's enduring performance. In so doing, Wefring gives dramatic expression to his unique vision of nature.
