Press Release

Billy Soza War Soldier is an artist with fire and passion for life, art, politics and culture. His works are a visceral expression of animals endowed with spiritual power, painted using loud, striking colors and feverish brushwork. War Soldier uses color to suggest flames, motion, and intensity, creating paintings as profound as they are fascinating to look at. Born in California in 1949, and affiliated with the Cahuilla and Apache tribes, War Soldier has a long devotion to the arts, being educated at the Art Institute of Chicago, and St. John’s College in Santa Fe, in addition to an Artist in Residence at the Art Students League in New York. As a member of the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in the 1960s, War Soldier was part of a powerfully motivated and student-centered art program. “It was just a hot bed of talent when I went to IAIA,” he states, “The talent came out because we were given pretty much a Carte Blanche of supplies and allowed to paint as much we wanted.” Recently acquiring representation in New York, the art world continues to display an interest in the art of War Soldier.
