Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Fine Art Photographer and Photojournalist, Betsey Chesler's dazzling photographic work is a display of technical virtuosity and an inquisitive creative mind. Chesler has had a lifelong love for photography, from her first experimentations with a homemade pinhole camera to today's ghostly infrared photography. She is a master of the craft, capturing picturesque landscape settings or hunting for dynamic compositions in the most unusual places. There are two influences that are apparent in her work; she cultivates a spiritual relationship with the act of creation while ever testing the mechanical capacity of photography to capture reality. “My goal as an artist is to reveal the aesthetic pleasure, creativity and emotion reflected in my work," Chesler states. Her landscape photos present water, trees, and stone in crystalline focus and as soothing as a whisper. Other works find her in a more photojournalistic mode, with sharp and intensely beautiful images reflecting our daily lives as we work and play.

Betsey Chesler’s art has been exhibited in Florida, Georgia, and New York, and featured in national publications. She resides in Boca Raton, Florida.

Betsey Chesler is the founder of Cameras For Kids Foundation.  Camer for kids is dedicated to teaching underprivileged teens living in foster facilities how to create art with a camera...much like I do as a Fine Art Photographer.  Having launched her program in Florida she will soon be expanding into Chicago and possibly the UK, Austria and Kenya.

Artist Statement

Photography has fascinated me since I was 10 years old. I began shooting with a pin-hole camera I made myself from a cardboard box, soon afterwards building a home darkroom with my father. The artistic limits were then endless. I spent hours together creating art through photography. After years raising a family I returned to my passion. I can now view my subjects with a seasoned eye, and capture images with a sense of freedom, curiosity and an element of surprise. On a shoot, I delight in challenges, going to great lengths to achieve the unexpected. I have two sides. As a Photojournalist I want to capture reality and send the appropriate message to the viewer, to increase the level of social awareness. As a Fine Art Photographer, I focus on creating beauty and delivering the subject's individual uniqueness. My artistic goal is to reveal aesthetic pleasure, creativity and emotion as reflected in my work.
