Press Release
A talented craftsman with a playful imagination, Belinda Wilson’s mixed media works will take audiences into a world of magic and wonderment. Her artistic approach is expressed through painterly layers of color and texture accompanied by precise linework. Sprawling landscapes of ochre, crimson and violet rest beneath beautiful blue skies, and within this idyllic scenery we find figures ambling, soaring, and tumbling in a state of suspended motion. These are divine moments yet not to be taken at face value. The paintings are rich with allegory where ladders or movement become symbols of joyous freedom. One may feel that the youngster within has been finally released from the bonds of the unyielding adult world. Yet within this youthful exuberance lurks the wisdom of maturity. "I capture on canvas what I see every day," she explains, "I portray the landscape as both harsh and mellow, an area both barren and fertile."
Wilson has lived in many countries and has exhibited internationally for over twenty years. She presently resides in Wangaratta, Australia.
Artist Statement
As an artist from Australia who has already exhibited both nationally and internationally I take my inspiration from wherever I happen to be. After spending time away, I returned to regional Victoria to re-engage with my spiritual home. My work is inspired by the environment and I capture on canvas what I see every day. I portray the landscape as both harsh and mellow, an area both barren and fertile. My current work is created on beautiful stone hedge paper which enables the oil paint to glide effortlessly across the surface. My work is based on colour and texture and a technique of layering the medium to build up surfaces.
