Masters of the Imagination: The Latin American Fine Art Exhibition
September 13 - October 4, 2011 Reception: Thursday September 15, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Fantasy and whimsy collide with skillful, exacting artistic technique in Brazilian painter Andre Netto’s works. Bold, expressive color is applied through smooth, precise brushstrokes, formulating exotic, abstract compositions. Netto’s use of fluidity and movement is exceptional, as forms and lines glide through two-dimensional surfaces with an unmistakable poeticism of action. While Netto is practiced in Renaissance painting methods, he expounds and develops these aesthetic approaches through his imaginative eye for the extraordinary. Grounding his thematic and artistic character in Fantastic Realism, the artist reworks the human figure and its environs in these illuminating, alluring paintings. “In my work one can find the content of magic and fantastic elements noticed as part of “normality” by the character, magical elements sometimes perceived but never explained,” he says.  Through this mysterious blend of the natural and the unreal, he inspires the viewer to look beyond the expected or the mundane in contemporary life.

Engaged in sculpting and drawing as well as painting, Andre Netto lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil.

Artist Statement

Originally, I specialized in the painting techniques of the Renaissance and the creation of canvas and used pigments. Influenced by Dutch and German artists (Centuries XV and XVI), I learned to integrate their meticulous naturalism, details and vibrant colors, which go beyond the precision of the textures and new perspectives. I use the distorted perspective as a dramatic action resource, allowing me to create situations in suspended time. Strange characters, through their movement, disclose depths and expressions in their eyes and gestures. Magical and fantastic elements are present, including distorted time which helps to create a new and powerful perspective.
