With audaciously bold colors and grating brushstrokes, Amitabh SenGupta explores our relationship with culture and history. Evoking a sense of timelessness, SenGupta’s work often consists of ancient script-like forms. With vigorous primary tones, SenGupta breathes a vibrantly contemporary feel into these antiquated shapes, clashing the past with the present in a dynamically intoxicating blend. The viewer is swept up in SenGupta’s whirlwind of seductively vivacious color and richly dexterous brushwork. SenGupta means for his work to resonate with a plethora of cultures and traditions, and uses his script forms in order to delve into our opulently diverse reality. “Scripts from various languages seemed to me a unique form of collective - art of the societal mind,” states SenGupta. “They are the hidden story of man, and continuously transformed through a long process of cultural transfusions.” In his use of courageous colors and freshly primitive forms, SenGupta examines how we relate to history and ourselves.
SenGupta lives and works in Calcutta.
