Press Release
Photographer Allen Bryan gently imbues his works with a sense of purposeful poetry. Working in digital photographic processes, Bryan seeks a certain disquiet in his seemingly serene panoramic pieces. Light is at once glowingly comfortable and hauntingly foreboding. Familiar vistas become somehow alien, leaving us to wonder at the truth of our reality. Bryan’s photographs function as cunningly intriguing reminders that appearances sometimes deceive. “These are pictures of a world that isn’t as real as it looks at first glance,” Bryan states. A consummate collector of ephemeral moments, Bryan has exhibited his work throughout the United States.
Artist Statement
Comforts of Home came about as I searched in recent years for connections between my early, quickly taken photographs of oddities and ironic juxtapositions and the slower, far more contemplative landscape work that followed. I realized that I could go beyond merely taking photographs as a way of editing and refining my vision of the world. Using digital tools I am able to re-examine and reorganize my photographic life, creating pictures that question our comfortable reality. The places in these pictures are figments constructed from slide and digital images, varied light sources and lenses, altered perspectives and depth of field.
