Press Release
The highly original works of Alexey Marroquin show a great deal of technical skill. Not just artistic skill, but practical mechanical skill as well, which is noteworthy in the world of art. In his first artworks, mainly on mirrors, large metal sheets and processed woods, Marroquin’s work was dominated by line. These lines acted as rigid boundaries to fields of intense color, bordering reds, blacks and ultramarine, the occasional free line bisecting the composition. More recently, working on metal and aluminum sheets, Marroquin has come to allow himself greater freedom. Lines become expressive channels, writhing and undulating through the work, free and unbounded; texture moderates the monochrome as points rise above the surface like pulsating constellations.
Working through architectural themes and choosing different materials, Alexey Marroquin found in Nature, unconsciously at first, a delight in the infinity of shapes and forms, developing his vision to create surrealist themes. He currently lives and works in Guatemala.
Artist Statement
Ever since I was a kid I've had an interest in the plastic arts. My parents nurtured this with art books, painting lessons, and visits to studios of famous artists in our country. Then architecture, technology and the different kinds of industrial materials used in construction caught my attention, inspiring my first artworks which reflected modern architecture using mirrors and aluminium. Afterwards I started to work with metal sheets and processed woods rather than mirrors and glass, though I still used aluminium forms. After many pieces like this, I felt the need to break with the rigidity of architectonic themes and start afresh with flexible lines. All this brought me, unconsciously, to focus on Nature, delighting in its infinity of shapes and forms. I was led to create two important series of artworks, "Universe & Nature" and "Terrestrial Visions". I am now concentrating on surrealist themes. One of my latest series is called "The Phenomena".
