Using a tiny point-and-shoot camera, Alec Von Bargen seeks to capture the realities of our world one moment at a time. Each panel of digital photographs represents a collection of moments, brief glimpses into our most solitary journeys and the ways these paths inevitably intersect with the outer world. These are Von Bargen’s “horizontal conversations,” a capturing of single instances resonating true with their historical, political, and social contexts. As spectators, we’re invited to respond, to react, to provoke, to converse, to commit, and to open our eyes to experiences seemingly distant from our own.
Alec Von Bergen works all over the world but resides in the Mayan jungle near Akumal, Mexico.

Artist Statement

Armed only with a tiny point and shoot camera I feed from the impact of the world around me. I travel. I’m moved. I photograph. I research. Catharsis. I obsess. I create. The aesthetics are of the utmost importance. I’m not interested in mere shock value. Reflecting the reality of daily life I dirty my images, I add noise, I keep them out of focus. It’s all about an instant resonating true with the historical, political and social baggage each moment represents. My work constitutes the horizontal conversations I sustain with myself; each panel a breath.
