Press Release
Aimeé Perez brings the warmth and passion of Mexico, her native land, to her realist and emotive human portraits. This self-taught artist begins by recording her subject in pencil on canvas, meticulously conveying the minute details of his or her features, expression, and surroundings. She then renders this scene in color, applying a thin layer of oil paint with small brushes, using light and shadow to create a lifelike image of her subject at a given moment. Aimeé strives to “give form . . . to something ambitious—that seal that each of us have that makes us what we are, that ‘something’ that gives importance to a piece of time.” The resulting works allow glimpses into the lives of her subjects and connections with their intimate thoughts and emotions, thus prompting viewers to ponder, to think, to feel.
Born in Leon, Guanajuato, in central Mexico, Aimeé currently lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Artist Statement
I enjoy painting with the tiniest brushes to give the tiniest details expression. I like to capture the subject’s essence in the image, give form on the canvas to that special something within each of us that makes us what we are, which gives importance to a moment of time. I don’t use electronic aids. I take pictures of some of the elements I want and use them as my reference. I spend a third of the time drawing the details with pencil. Afterwards I apply the oil in a very thin layer. I never go back to do a second layer. When I finish a painting I always try to see what I would have done differently, to make it excellent. It's a learning process which becomes a challenge and produces a new beginning. It’s like a chain reaction, when I finish a painting I’m starting the next one…
