Adelia Sayeg

Masters of the Imagination: The Latin American Fine Art Exhibition
September 10 - October 1, 2010 Reception: Thursday September 16, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Adelia Sayeg grew up in Mexico City, surrounded by all of its art, music, history, and colors, and it is from there that she draws her inspiration. Combining paints with found treasures from nature such as pieces of wood, stone, clay, wool, metal, bone, and shell, which she reorders into one intriguing weave, she creates mixed-media compositions that incorporate organic shapes, colors, and textures to evoke the complexity of the Earth and of spiritual life. Inspired by the pre-Hispanic painters of Mexico, colors are balanced, blending reds, blues, oranges, ochres, and black. Forms are geometric and understated yet expansive. Textual additions, such as bone and shells, recall the art, architecture, and belief systems of Mexico’s cultural heritage.

Adelia’s masterful use of color, texture, and form creates an experience both sensory and emotive for all who view her work. Her evocative tales of great beauty are suggestive of a story without end. Her images remind us of the sacredness of cultural legacy and the lessons still to be learned by living in harmony with Earth.

Artist Statement

Ever since I was a child, I have collected unique organic things from the earth — from pieces of wood, seeds, roots, cotton and fibers to minerals, stones, beads, shells — any insignificant item represented a treasure to me. Nowadays, I use these found objects in my painting, which along with symbols, textures, and colors evolve on the canvas and allow me to reach feelings of complete joy and peace. My work is made of several layers of different materials, painting over painting; reds, oranges, ochres, blues, organic elements, sand, icons, along with incrustations of horn, steel, wood and clay. In this way, I express what I hear inside of me. In this inner dialogue my feelings have no boundaries.
