Vers la Lumière : Paul M. Cote / Solo Exhibition

A new exhibition is coming to Gallery II in April. The work of the talented Paul M. Cote returns to our elegant adjacent gallery space to brighten up your day and confirm that spring really has arrived. Refreshing and full of vitality, this exhibition will gift its visitors with a feeling of renewal. The show begins April 19, 2011 and continues until May 10, 2011. The opening reception will take place on April 21, 2011 and all art-lovers are warmly encouraged to attend. As always, entrance is free.

The title of the exhibition is ‘Vers la Lumière,’ meaning ‘Towards the Light’ and this may provide a clue to one of the notable elements of the pieces – a sense of striving and a determination to succeed that characterizes the most resolute of human actions. Equally, the titles of many of the works reference natural materials or phenomena, suggesting that we should look for an interpretation, and perhaps an exploration, of aspects of the natural world.

Many readers will recall that Paul M. Cote displayed his works in a solo exhibition in Gallery II last year. The exhibition took place in August 2010 and was the subject of much interest and appreciation. However, the returning audience will easily be able to see the development of the artist’s style which has taken place since the previous exhibition, reflecting his growth in both personal and artistic terms.

The subject matter of the paintings has changed, though it still reflects a love of the fantastic and a desire to share experience of the world. In addition, these new works are less clearly figurative, meaning that viewers must work a little harder to uncover a narrative structure. Whilst equally appealing, the pieces in ‘Vers la Lumière’ take us further into the artist’s personal universe and provide us with an absorbing encounter with a creative and agile mind.

Yet despite these changes in Cote’s style, the powerful energy that was a crucial part of his previous work still remains and brings an aura of dynamism to each piece. Moreover, the careful and measured attention to detail and the artist’s determination to ensure that each creation is as perfect as possible means that every painting enjoys a judiciously appraised balance and poise that adds much to the overall experience.
