Exhibition: Year in Pictures 2009

A new exhibition is coming to Gallery II, Agora Gallery’s recently acquired sophisticated gallery space, adjacent to the main gallery. It’s a photography show called ‘Year in Pictures’, organized by the NYPPA, and it will run from October 29, 2010 until November 19, 2010. The opening reception will be held on Thursday October 29 between 5 and 8pm.

It’s said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and as many of the readers of this blog are visual artists by profession, they will probably agree. It’s certainly true that images have tremendous power over our impressions, thoughts and even memories. People sometimes say that important stages of their lives are crystalized for them in a single snap – mental or material – that seems to encapsulate the feeling of the moment.

This is equally applicable to current affairs; there are many stories that are immortalized through a particular image, whether it’s the famous shot of a mother with her children from the Great Depression, or an iconic image of a famous actress. Such images go to the root of what a person, event or movement was about, and capture it with a clarity and depth that speaks to everyone who sees it.

‘Year in Pictures’ is an annual event which is dedicated to just these kinds of images. The photographs which will form the exhibition are the winning entries of a competition which is held every year by the New York Press Photographer’s Association. By nature, the images showcased are a retrospective on a year, so those in the forthcoming exhibition at Agora Gallery were taken in 2009.

The winning images are jury-selected, and this year the panel was comprised of three jurors, all amply capable of making the difficult decisions required by the role. They were John Filo (CBS Still Photographer, NY Former AP, Philadelphia Inquirer, Director of Photography Camden Courier Post), Rusty Kennedy (Freelance Philadelphia, Former AP) and Mary Calvert (Freelance Washington, Former Washington Times).

The NYPPA is the oldest press association in the world, and it continues to function to help and connect working photographers who work for news organizations in both print and electronic media which are based within a 75 mile radius of Manhattan.
