Rio de Janeiro 2   Digital Painting - Inkjet Print on Paper   23.5" x 36.5"

Cosmopolitan artist Wolfgang Hock sees his digital paintings as free form translations of what exists, not as representations or copies. Each piece is inspired by a sketch or a photograph, then transformed by Hock into digital paintings. One of the things he likes about working on a computer is the ability to quickly change brush styles and paints, apply transparent layers of color, and work with speed and intuition. This gives his paintings a spontaneous quality which he prefers over a more finished, naturalistic style. Hock wants to avoid presenting his work as "reality," especially one that is digitally altered to be more beautiful or presentable than it actually is. Instead, what we get is something fresh, impulsive and honest.

Every digital painting produced by Hock is a unique printing, much like an intaglio print — they are not reproductions, but editions in a series. Born in Germany and having lived and traveled all over the world, especially Latin America, the artist hopes that his work will help promote freedom, which he defines as open access to knowledge, culture and communication, as well as fighting against oppression and intolerance.
