Four Degrees of Abstraction

The unique styles and working methods of the artists showcased in Four Degrees of Abstraction are a consequence of seeking to express the ineffable in new, personal ways. Rapturous beauty combines with intriguing symbolism to explore the inner and outer worlds; each artwork becomes a note in a collective effort to unlock the mysteries of being.

My major focus is creativity. In abstract paintings I can express my creativity without limitation of a theme, subject or style. My abstract paintings reflect my love for vivid colors. I have also recently begun incorporating intricate details into my work, so that viewers can constantly find kaleidoscopic scenes of figures, faces, animals and architectural forms. I find it very spiritually rewarding to explore my creativity and be able to bring to canvas what lies within me. Through the creative process I realized that the possibilities for artistic expression are endless. My canvas is a playground where I can let my inner world create my outer word. It is an inner journey of discovery and exploration of the gift I am blessed with. I use it to spread positive energy and joy. I love it!

Sung Hong

Sung HongSung Hong

Sung Hong's mixed media pieces experiment with the concept of Automation to produce dreamlike works of total abstraction.  Creating from the realm of the unconscious, Hong's highly theoretical works reject the constraints of traditional representational art and instead deal exclusively with non objective imagery, focusing on texture, color and line.  The airy depth of each canvas recalls Sung Hong's mental and artistic process.  The eye delves into the mysterious space of the canvas, as the artist has allowed her unconscious mind to guide the construction.  By working in a muted color palette on a richly textured surface, her canvases portray a powerful, but inherently quiet and introspective presence.  Her artwork calls to the viewer, beckoning them forward with their textural complexity and hold the attention with a tenuous and intriguing balance.

Sung Hong is a graduate of the prestigious Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC.  Her work has been exhibited internationally in Washington DC, New York, Maryland, and Korea. She teaches abstract art at Chesapeake College, MD.

From a young age, colors and forms have caught my attention, so I decided to use art as an instrument to register the emotions that I live everyday.  To reach my goal of conveying my emotions in my artwork, I use vibrant colors, different materials and techniques.  Just as the range of my emotions is broad so is the range of materials. I use in my work: fabric, sand, paper, different types of paint, acrylic plaster and seeds.  My technique and materials vary greatly depending upon my mood and the mood of my painting.

From childhood to the present day, I have always considered myself an artist in the process of developing a visual language. From childhood I was enveloped by visual art processes which I used as a way to solve problems. I took on challenges such as painting and drawing still lifes and landscapes, and was intrigued by the diagrammatical purposes of maps and charts as I found myself drawing from encyclopedias while altering the information for my artistic purposes. My current body of work focuses primarily on issues within contemporary society like verbal abuse and the almost commonplace presence of divorce. I believe that by showing the negative and positive effects of words, I can open a dialog that can lead to unification rather than division within the home. My hope is always that my works will contribute to a healing of past wounds and increased faith and peace for volatile homes.

Sensorial Realities

Sensorial Realities is a collection of whimsical works of contemporary art exploring both the spiritual and earthly themes. These visionary artists take us on a merry expedition though mystic jungles and intergalactic realms, while delving into the yearly cycles of birth and rebirth. Other works focus on the timeless, transformative power of the figure. Together these creative minds provide us with an extraordinary art experience.

Michael Berger

Past field work in geology and geochemistry cultivated my appreciation for the vivid colors of stones, like red sandstone or dark blue vulcanite, and were crucial to my artistic development because they inspired my first investigations into color and mood. My geological background has flowed into my current work, with the intense colors I came across there finding new expression in the magnetic planetary bodies, stars and constellations which make up the universe I have created through my art. I developed the term 'Transformable ART' to describe my new technique, because a key feature of it is the combination of painting and sculpture to produce pieces of art which are not static, but may change their appearance by manual interaction. Thus the work exists in a constant state of creation, ever changing in its dimensions and arrangements, a reflection of the universe itself.

I believe my work exhibits a highly graphic bent (in great part, no doubt, due to my experience as Creative Director). My objective has always been to merge and extend that graphic sensibility to my paintings. I am addicted to movement, color and to the simplicity of forms. I would like to believe my work exhibits a whimsical, energetic, almost child-like feel, and as simplistic as it may sound, offer a sense of "joy".  I am a great admirer of Chagall, and hope that my work in some very small way emulates the energy and optimism his work exhibits.

Melissa Norenberg

Melissa NorenbergMelissa Norenberg

Drawing visual inspiration from Surrealist and Abstract painting, Melissa Norenberg’s mixed media and acrylic works shimmer with the enthusiastic spirit of a dedicated artist.  Norenberg possesses an incredible emotional and technical depth: her paintings range from humorous and light hearted to quiet and introspective, and comfortably tackle both representational and non-objective subjects. Gracefully, Norenberg harnesses the emotive power of color, texture and gesture to create intriguing Surrealist scenes and elegant images of total abstraction.  Perhaps most impressive, Norenberg’s paintings have the incredible ability to transport the mind.  Resting the eye on Norenberg’s expertly applied pigments, following the gentle curves and exciting movements of her brushstrokes, the viewer becomes completely immersed in her artwork.  The world fades away and the rest is simply art.

A self taught artist, Melissa Norenberg has enjoyed considerable success as a gallerist and painter.  She is an avid student of Surrealism and Abstraction and has exhibited her work throughout her native Wisconsin and in New York.

Painting is like a performance on canvas where I get to express theatrically, my passion for life, fascination with change, human nature and life's unexpected realities. The performance begins with spontaneous black strokes that form the basis of my subject matter, and ends with layers of bold color and vivid imagery which is the dominating force throughout my work.  With no rules or boundaries, I create works that are expressive, emotionally charged, and in the end, less rooted to any specific source, but more towards the spirit of the painting.

Although I have been involved in the world of art and design all my working life it was not until I was fortunate enough to meet and collaborate with Barry Flanagan that with his help, guidance, and encouragement I devoted my time to full-time sculpture. Since then I have worked with all sculptural mediums, but I always return to stone and marble. At the stone quarry I seek out a piece of marble for a particular project, looking for colour, grain, and density. For me many are beautiful because they are real, natural, they can hold and reflect the light and shadows, and what I carve from them will do the same, will catch the eye and hold the attention. Such is the power of natural beauty - and because of it I am happy to give the love and dedication required in the creation of a sculpture.

Tineke Wilde

Tineke WildeTineke Wilde

Tineke Wilde adeptly renders human figure in her quietly spiritual works of sculpture. Her ceramic figures as well as her paintings possess a tactile, human quality and soulfulness that results from their purposeful imperfection. As she models both clay and paint, the artist deliberately allows surfaces to remain uneven, as she believes these perceived flaws enhance each work’s emotional value and emotive qualities. Although Wilde chooses subject matter relating directly to her everyday life and draws inspiration from the domestic sphere, the majority of her body of work carries an underlying theme around freedom and choice. With an interest in mythology and women’s issues, Tineke Wilde utilizes goddess figures, like the Egyptian deity Bast, to address the concepts of motherhood, birth and familial relationships.

Born in the Netherlands, Wilde immigrated to New Zealand in 1981.  She now lives and works near Auckland.

The Portal of Tranquility

Soothing naturalist vistas await audiences of Agora Gallery’s The Portal of Tranquility. Nature has always retained the power to enhance our understanding of ourselves and these artists recognize the potent visual possibilities of the natural domain. Here we find each painter, in varying degrees of realism, striking out on their own path and taking delight in the rhythms and energies of the creation itself.

Alexei Adamov

Alexei AdamovAlexei Adamov

Russian painter Alexei Adamov – who splits his time between Moscow and his seaside hometown Taganrog – creates subtle and majestic landscapes. Shifting between pastoral and seaside visions, he renders nature in an exquisitely immersive aesthetic, evoking all manner of tactile, aural and olfactory information. Looking at one of Adamov’s woodland paths or beachfront vistas conjures the smells, sounds and sensations of those spaces. This instantly resonant sensorial experience likens his work to that of preceding Russian romantic and realist painters, but Adamov’s refined sense of light and application give his art a uniquely luminescent quality.

Observed in detail, each work features a gentle pattering of small paint daubs, a trace of impressionism that lends his Russian locales a broader European atmosphere. Indeed, with a family history determined and re-shaped by both World Wars, Adamov displays a vast geographic awareness. Finally, light – seeping through leaves on trees and foggy skies, refracted in ponds or shimmering off lakes and waves – lends his humble nature scenes a spectacular theatricality.

Kerstin Arnold

Kerstin ArnoldKerstin Arnold

Kerstin Arnold’s oil paintings imbue life’s intimate moments with exquisite vitality. Rendered with utmost precision, the objects that Arnold paints become more lucid and captivating on canvas than they are in reality. China, glassware and liquid appear to be immune to peril, perpetually occupying that blissful space in which life unfolds flawlessly. Inspired by people, animals and common objects, Arnold often uses photographs she composes as the basis for her paintings. The perspectives are often unexpected—she might take an aerial view of a still life or confront an object head-on. Once she begins to paint, she applies color in several layers, gradually building up the richness of each image. With a lineage that spans from the Old Masters to Edward Hopper and David Hockney, Arnold’s work actively interacts with representative painting’s long, abundant history.

Before she began exhibiting as an artist, Arnold pursued a successful career as a draughtswoman and her precise drafting skills enhance her paintings’ magnetism. Kerstin Arnold lives and works in Germany.

I am from Morocco, and artists and recollections of my home country play an important role in influencing my art, as does nature. I do not tie myself to one style, because I believe that each artist is a student in himself, and has the responsibility to try everything he can to express what he means. My art explores both very personal subjects and more general topics, often through the use of a new medium and its possibilities. I use art to say more than I can with words, and to look beyond what is seen to illuminate the hidden beauty within.

Each one of our paintings is the record of a journey.  Each journey is filled with adventure and excitement, which we ultimately hope to share with the viewer. The magic of our medium is that it has its own personality, which is filled with surprises.  Sometimes things happen that are so beautiful, we can barely control our excitement, like two children opening gifts. During our sojourns through this mysterious world, we rarely plan the journey or even attempt to identify the destination.  This allows the story to unfold of its own accord, and keeps the mystique intact. We are often reticent to call a piece finished.  Once we sign a piece, the journey is officially over.  However, the adventure remains for the viewer to discover.

Quick brushstrokes, simplicity of design and the development of negative white space allow me to create loose and dynamic watercolor paintings in the context of architectural and landscape subjects. My limited palette of raw umber and Prussian blue serves to unite my paintings, hopefully evoking an emotional response from the viewer.

The Saturated Palette

The Saturated Palette is a collection of artists conceiving novel forms of expressive abstract painting. Highly energetic and personal, these artists forge new pathways of visual articulation, while exploring music, philosophy and performing arts. The selection of art works will delight audiences who embark upon an exploration of imagery rich with symbolism and a vigorous pulse. This is contemporary painting at it’s finest: colorful, brave, and breathtaking.

Taras Borovyk

Taras BorovykTaras Borovyk

There is an exuberance and sincerity in the works of Taras Borovyk that has become a rare find in some contemporary painting.  His richly saturated oils are at once decorative, representational and highly personal. One can feel the pull of the artist’s native Ukraine in his bright renderings of cityscapes and still lifes, reminiscent of stained glass or mosaic panels. The Impressionistic treatment of light in conjunction with the decorative modeling of form through outline creates paintings that recapture the pure joy of early modernism, the joy of painting that is both a representation of life and the method of perceiving it.

For Borovyk, art is “not only what you create but how you see everything around you.”  He developed this philosophy in his early work as a muralist and it is apparent in his work today; his paintings are meant to communicate, they are meant to make visible the world around us with “the insight of a poet… pausing to celebrate the subtle and profound.”

My curiosity about life has led me, in art, to experiment with many methods of plastic expression. But whether I’m working in oil, sculpture or print, it’s all a way of sharing my zest for life, of capturing the instant. Matisse, who has been a major influence in my work, said that a great modern conquest has been the secret of expression through colour. It is precisely this secret that I use with oils, combining my intuition, quick strokes and my transgression of the limits of drawing to achieve expressivity in my paintings, to capture the moment. I reflect the person rather than their likeness. The subject matter of my work is inspired by my passion for beauty, and shaped by my imagination and personal experiences. My daily journey of discovery and rediscovery offers me fresh inspiration to contrive and to share.

Lenore Sempert

Lenore SempertLenore Sempert

Lenore Sempert’s paintings connote strength. Her strokes are bold and confident, suggesting that landscapes and cityscapes can be powerful places in which individualistic dynamism and cohesiveness coexist. Influenced by Color Field artists and Abstract Expressionists, Sempert engaged the theme of freedom in her work. Vigorous brushwork, vibrant colors and compositional innovation all point toward independent expressiveness. Yet, despite its autonomy, Sempert’s work has everything to do with spaces, cities and urbanity. Inspired by her experiences in New York City, Sempert wants to pull her viewers in to the pulse of city life, yet she does not control their interaction with her work; she gives her viewers the freedom to interpret it for themselves. Her work is ultimately about experiences—the experience of being an individual and the experience of interacting with communities and spaces.

Lenore Sempert studied at the Art Student's League and received a B.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1976. She lives and works in Brookline, Massachusetts and she has shown widely throughout New England.

I create works in which visual art & writing are inside each other, as it were, intersecting each other. I combine my text (words, poems) with my art, using it in some of my artworks. Female human characters (“Mademoiselle”) appear in my art as the characters of stories. Symbolism is also important to me; bicycles appear as a nature-friendly ecological vehicle, expressing the relationship between human beings & the natural environment, while shoes & shoelaces represent communication. My art works include “acrylic and ink on canvas or on textile”, “mixed media on textile or on canvas“, and so on, and the colors I use are influenced by those of traditional Japanese artwork.
