Elements of Abstraction

Elements of Abstraction presents audiences with a rich kaleidoscope of color, form, and texture that in conjunction breathes life into abstract artworks. Whether employing shimmering brushstrokes or bold fields of color, nonrepresentational art, with its lack of familiar forms, allows the work to speak to us on an especially elemental level. Through their deeply personal forms of expression, these artists offer a stunning glimpse into contemporary abstract painting.

I was born in Guadeloupe, but have an ongoing love affair with the art, culture and people of the USA - still one of the main temples of contemporary art today - so for me one very important aspect of my work is bringing the artistic vision of a French artist from the Caribbean to the international art industry. I am privileged to live in a melting pot of civilizations, a special kind of crossroads full of beauty and paradox. The greatest thing for me as an artist is to build on that and bring its energy and creativity to give people happiness. I love to see viewers admiring and finding joy in my work and reflections.

At first I was engaged in studying and creating in the style of Oriental paintings, and then later began to dedicate myself to Western paintings. I studied painting by myself without going to any specialized institute. In my paintings, pine trees are personified in the form of human beings, and the main concept of the paintings is eros, love. Acrylic color products are used for my works. During the first period, I preferred working with more realistic paintings, where figures were fairly concrete, but these days I am trying to represent eros through abstract paintings instead. My artistic style is continually evolving, but I try always to remain true to my central theme and concept.

A synthesis of disparate and fragmented ideas often possess a poetic connectedness that enables them to develop a compelling tendency so often seen in great works of art. The force that draws these often fragile and displaced moments to extend beyond their individual universe into a collective argument, akin to the human condition, is the creative instinct of the artist, who must fight his own inclinations and allow all occurrences to mature and evolve on their own disturbing terms. This is my intent, to construct a vernacular that reflects my curiosities, nurtured by a keen interest in twentieth century art that also provides a vehicle to transcend the predictable. The thread that loosely ties these self exploratory works is barely visible but remains profoundly present in the grammar and language that takes its roots from the schools of the Abstract Expressionists and the Venetian painters in particular.

I see art, in Goethe's words, as the mediator of the unspeakable. In my art I am able to use the materials, colors and techniques to express my thoughts, feelings and personal experiences. It is part of how I communicate. Painting is for me a supremely joyful process, which always comes with an inner smile that only grows. Part of the pleasure of painting is the hope that the results will spread light and goodness in the world, and help viewers to get in touch with their inner selves. In this way, it fits into the rest of my life, especially into my work with the non-profit organisation I set up to assist the rehabilitation of unemployed and socially disadvantaged individuals.

My greatest appreciation in life is the gift of spiritual connection through the arts. I have always had a special star in the horizon, too far from the grasp of my hand, but close enough to comfort my soul. As a child I was always chasing the unknown, untold elements of this life. I have the privilege to create bright pulsating color, through charismatic brush strokes, allowing the voyeur emotional energy of unadulterated joy and freedom. It has been an exciting venture in the creation of a definitive style that sets me apart from all other artists. Rio evolved from fantasy, Color is my life, Dreams my reality. You hold the essence of my being as you acquire my creation. I am drawn to the mystic and the beautiful. “Challenge your soul...believe in believing.” I have the courage, the inspiration, the dedication. Above all, I have the gift.

Artistically, I have always been captivated by form and human spirituality. Virtually every piece of art that I create takes on an organic or lifelike form, whether it is in clay, silver or paint. Many of my paintings focus on expressions and personalities of a particular subject, whether through vibrant color or sedate detail. I like to use mixed-media; I might use acrylic, pastels and ink, then add pieces or objects that relate to the subject matter. A great deal of my current work is centered on physical obsessions, notably the topic of the female body and how women might use their own bodies as a starting point for artistic expression. I am also continually intrigued by questions of how art influences society, and am engaged in an exploration of race and culture. All this helps me to create in my work a looking-glass for the soul.

Enigmatic Realms

Inventive and spontaneous, the mind of each artist is a world unto itself and they are compelled towards the act of creation. Within Enigmatic Realms audiences may observe the sheer endless forms of inspiration within our grasp. Life experiences, spirituality, and natural splendor become the muse for the talented individuals collected here, as they take us on a journey into the world as seen through their eyes.

Painting is the synthesis between artist and subject as they transcend part of themselves to create a perfect union. Painting is a way of thought. There are no words that really describe the process, as thoughts are emotions and hues and shapes. It is calculated chaos resulting in harmony. Painting captures the spirit as if one could take a breath of wind, hold it and give it to another. Painting is the spirit of man captured on canvas. Art will always be interesting as we are innately intrigued about the plight of the human condition. It is a map of our journey - our past and our future. This is my inspiration.

I'm an artist with an academic background, having had an extensive art training in both my native Russia and England. In addition I have had work experience as a Painter, Illustrator and Graphic Designer which allowed me to explore myself, to learn how to see and reproduce Beauty in my own way, create my own style. The subjects which attract me in my work are the "feminine figure" and "the colours of exotic countries". Travelling, living in different countries, and exploring and painting ancient cultures like India, Nepal and Egypt all influenced my art. Regardless of the subject matter, my "search for  beauty" is visible and my brushstrokes are still recognisable... I seek to reproduce the beauty of Nature with a modern approach.

My art expresses my interpretation of the environment and the changes it has suffered, which can only be understood from a historical and cultural point of view. Many Latin American artists such as Diego Rivera, Jorge Luis Cuevas and Orozco, and European artists such as Corbet and Goya understood this and they found a balance between the political and the personal, between the aesthetic and the social. My intent is to create art that expresses this balance. Through my landscapes and figurative art I make reference to the changes my surroundings suffered, but when I describe these changes I use an aesthetic vocabulary of the past. In this way I am trying to put this reality in historical perspective.

In my diverse body of work, I work with abstract structures and portraits of women as a channel for me to analyze and hopefully understand my own unknown answers. My computer-derived abstract structures capture uncertain moments in my memory, dreams and imagination. My portraits of women explore the universal expression of human hair as it relates to individuality, cultures, beliefs, and life experiences. Female hair allows me to connect with my images, as I aim to reveal pieces of my story through other women and to bring life into the image. Recently I have worked on a project taking the illusion of perfection of female models and corrupting the fabricated display, altering their identities, and portraying them in unglamorous conditions. This raw gesture emerges from my personal experience of being in the shadows of fabricated displays. I am the voice in the background trying to scream out the bitter truth.

My painting begins with emotion. That emotions builds up both the form and climate of the developing picture. In this sense painting is from within me. My favorite color is red. Red stands in the center of the elementary elements of painting, dividing the realities of matter and spirit. Light is also an essential component of my work, contributing to the formal structure and the atmosphere of a piece. The use of symbolism is important to me too, and both figurative representations of symbols and the transformation of colors work for me on this level. In all my paintings I experiment with matter, structure, color and the penetration of planes. I like to collate soft biological forms with the hard, determined surface of the paint.

I once was an ink painter, and since then I have always expected myself to infuse the idea of soulfulness, calmness, and clarity, which I found in ink painting, into my oil painting works. I paint as if I had Van Gogh’s calling. I enjoy being in tune to what is in my heart at the moment and defining it. I thrill at connecting with my entire self. This is a significant element of the meaning my work has for me, and the reason art is such an important part of myself and my life.

I am giving a new twist to old standards by adding more reality into the scene. I call my art 'Poetic Pop Art', the evolution of Pop Art! In classic Pop Art the detail is moved into isolation to draw the attention to the trivial, using the power of Striking Art. The trivial becomes the new focus and is set in a new context. 'Poetic Pop Art' takes it one step further. By adding 'drama' to the trivial a contradiction is created, the trivial nullified! This extra element gives the scene a whole new dynamic... Both content and appearance involve contradiction - using acrylics on canvas allows me to work with the intensity of opaque colors and their brightness. The seriousness of the Message and the cheerfulness of the Image almost fight with each other, resulting in an initial moment of shock for the viewer.
