Metamorphosis

Sebastien Chaillou

Sebastien Chaillou creates exciting compositions reminiscent of Pablo Picasso. Using intense colors, Chaillou composes worlds in which his figures have two faces, a hand is also a head and the shapes of things are more important than the things themselves. Chaillou’s work expresses an inherent harmony through his colorful figures. Though they may initially seem disjointed, ultimately the artist creates a cohesive scene that allows his viewer to apply his own interpretation to the work. Chaillou’s work exudes joyfulness at the multi-faceted nature of life and art. His figures flow into one another in pleasing yin-yang formations. For the viewer, we are free to create our own meaning to the colorful scene before us. Sebastien Chaillou has exhibited his work throughout France and Europe and his work has been reviewed and lauded by many newspapers in France. He currently lives and works in Aubigny-sur-Nère, France.

"Woman Who Lounges"

Robert Frederick Kauffmann

"Mathematical Surrealism" is how Robert Kauffmann terms his crystallographic patterning. Heavily influenced by M.C. Escher's illusionism and his own background in computer science, Kauffmann strives toward a unique type of abstraction. While hesitant to ally himself with computer art, he acknowledges the common ground of abstraction borne of numerical systems. Kauffmann rides the intellectual line between generative design, that which uses numerical systems to reflect nature, and nature reflecting numerical systems. In doing so he exposes natural systems and seemingly organic patterning as a function of intricate mathematical formulae. In 1987 Kauffmann earned a B.A. in computer science from Rutgers University. Since then, his work has received numerous awards, publication, and critical acclaim. Despite the digital aesthetic that Kauffmann references, his works are hand drawn and then transformed into serigraphs using a photo emulsion technique. "I have found the use of traditional methods to yield more satisfying results than the use of digital media," says Kauffmann.

Dmitry Shtyka

The surrealistic paintings of Dmitry Shtyka combine the fluid eccentricity of Salvador Dali with the romanticism of mythology. A tattoo artist by trade, Shtyka believes that his work reflects his profession. The viewer can easily see the precision of Shtyka's lines and the high-color saturation he uses in his paintings as a testament to his skill as both a tattoo artist and painter. His subject matter is both the natural and the fantastic. He paints landscapes as well as imaginary beings that represent entities like the sun, moon or autumn. Shtyka often draws on his dream life for his artistic inspiration. The result is a wild landscape of impossible combinations and situations that titillate and intrigue the viewer. Dmitry Shtyka lives and works in Ukraine.

Modern Perspectives

Corey West

In muted tones, delicate line-work and diaphanous washes of color, Corey West's "non-objective," abstract compositions evoke the color and atmosphere of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The diversity of subjects and media (the artist works in acrylic, watercolor, ink, spray-paint and collage), results in textured, ethereal compositions, constructed upon a dynamic dialogue between abstraction and figuration. Her subject matter ranges from seductively layered abstractions to emotive depictions of the flora and fauna of the natural world. Born in Sonora, California, West began drawing early in life and went on to sell her first painting at the age of 15. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Her work has been shown in various group and solo exhibitions and sold throughout the United States and in Germany, Switzerland and England. West lives and works in Sonora.

Primal Abstractions

Marco Antonio Abbagnara

Artist Marco Antonio Abbagnara paints stories, images and metaphors in his detailed, yet simple paintings. Abbagnara paints on black iron plates, called Monoliths. This medium adds an ancient quality to his work that compliments the themes he is interested in, such as legends, and universal experiences such as birth and death. The artist states that his greatest inspiration is “the expression of freedom.” The viewer can see this concept thoughtfully articulated in his paintings through the artist’s choices of form and color. Critics have praised Abbagnara’s work as “deep and introspective,” as well as “rich in symbols and full of emotion.” Marco Antonio Abbagnara has won several awards for his paintings and has exhibited his works in Milan and several other cities in Italy. He currently lives and works in Gallarate, Italy.

Micol Biasetti

The paintings of Micol Biasetti use instinct and imagination to guide the viewer’s senses through the barrage of color and movement contained in each canvas. Sensual, tactile and intense, Micol uses paint to tell a vivid story of emotion by covering, revealing and layering her colors. Reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, Micol's approach to artmaking is spontaneous, thus emphasizing the ebullient quality of her final creation. Micol builds a foundation in her painting through layering colors, and in some cases, uses a spare amount of white paint that is simply poured on top, uniting the disparate elements of her work in an almost sculptural manner. Micol's work thrives on the canvas, becoming a vivid story open to the viewer’s interpretation. Micol Biasetti was born in Lima, Peru, is an Italian citizen, and currently lives and works in Dallas, TX.

Janelle Fenwick

Painting in an abstract style, Janelle Fenwick creates the sensation of being in the present moment of the painting through her bold colors and thick, painterly style. Her work ranges from abstract and airy, with beautiful use of negative space, to brooding and dark with intense color combinations. The viewer can see a Picasso-esque influence in her work through the simplification of forms and brave brushwork. Fenwick states that her art is inspired by her life and by the people she has known, and indeed, the viewer is granted a sense of unique emotion accompanying each piece. With intriguing wit and subtle dynamism, Fenwick’s paintings lure the viewer inside each canvas, telling us a timeless story through pure color. Janelle Fenwick lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand.
