Valentina Sanina

Ukrainian-born artist Valentina Sanina creates “human art for human lives.” Her fantastical paintings are forays into human behavior, the psyche and its superego. Works like her acrylic on paper titled, “Actress,” remind us all of the identities we put on everyday while “Carnival,” and “Carnival (In a Blue Dress)” reveal the masks we wear. These images illustrate Sanina’s interest in human nature and her attempts to document human emotion and response. Visually, Sanina combines romantic imagery with realistic visions. Like the Post-Impressionist/early modern master, Henri Rousseau, Sanina’s work shares a naïveté for which artists including Picasso celebrated him. Her palette is intense and makes use of the effect sharp contrasts have on mood. Her figures are unconventionally imaginative, her attention to detail worthy of Le Douanier himself. Currently living in Des Plaines, Illinois Valentina Sanina moved to America in 1992 from Kakhovka where she was trained and celebrated as a muralist. Formally educated in the former USSR’s Simferopol University of the Arts and Kharkov Institute of Design, she was elected fellow to the prestigious Art Society of USSR. Her work has been published and exhibited in the former Soviet Union, Japan, and United States.
