Press Release
With a degree in architecture and extensive work experience in design, Steve Karol’s expert use of shape, form, and composition comes alive in his art. Karol’s works lie at a fresh intersection between digital and traditional media. His enhanced photography adds a unique and otherworldly aura to otherwise ordinary scenes of a home in Key West or a Kansas landscape, a windowsill or a lighthouse. Through such digital input, Karol idealizes his photographs, uniting familiar photographic ways of seeing with a brand of richness and abstraction most commonly seen in painting. Similarly, Karol’s digital paintings straddle boundaries by simulating several different paint textures at once. His “Cascade,” for example, blends the translucence of watercolor with the sleek assuredness of acrylic. Such mixed media works are among Karol’s newer undertakings. Karol has also worked in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, consciously selecting his medium based on his subject. Karol’s artistic vision aims to capture beauty, emotion, and an idea—be it religious, political, or philosophical. A native of New Jersey, Karol currently lives in Liberty, Missouri. His artwork can be seen in Parkville, Missouri’s Northland Exposure Art Gallery, which has showcased Karol’s art since 1999. His work has also appeared in KC Magazine and will comprise the cover of this November’s edition of KC Voices.
