Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Seo Jo’s intimate photographs portray nature in all its majesty, images made all the more stirring by the artistic touch she uses of placing herself in dramatic poses within the settings. The splendor of the natural world and the fragility of the human body are accentuated by juxtapositions between dark and light tones, as well as hard and soft textures. Yet despite the dramatic visual distinctions in her photographs, a major theme of Seo Jo’s work is that nature and humanity are inseparable. This primary truth fills her work with a feeling of timelessness. We also sense the blurring between static natural objects and ongoing organic processes. Objects in nature, like bushes, trees, and rocks, are seen here to be no different than the laws of nature, such as gravity, the circulatory system, desire, and cause and effect.

Like nature itself, Seo Jo’s self-portraits are more than the sum of their parts; they use visual language to convey a dramatic and timely narrative about our place in the universe.

Artist Statement

The theme of my work is that we are always with nature even when we have forgotten it or attempted to leave it behind. I went to create self-portraits in various landscapes. The more I tried to photograph there, the more I learned that nature and humanity are inseparable. I'd like to remind people that we come from nature, are part of nature, and are going back there, no matter what we think nature is. In my work, natural objects such as trees and rocks refer to nature itself as well as the laws of nature (which we often take for granted), such as gravity, the circulatory system, and cause and effect. These self-portraits are not just about my private world but about someone who came to realize they were inseparable from nature.
