Renata Cebular

The Rhythm of Color
November 20 - December 11, 2009 Reception: Thursday December 3, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

The freehand drawings of Renata Cebular are simultaneously simple and complex. In artistic technique and materials a minimalist nature dominates; Cebular’s technique is to draw the basic patterns at the beginning, using both hands, which lends a natural sensation to her work, as if the everyday doodle has taken a wonderful turn and been transformed into fine art. Working without the aid of preparatory sketches or templates, Cebular creates sweeping lines in ball-point pen and colored pencil, flowing strokes that generate a menagerie of fields and shapes. The resulting patterns are rich and intricate, a series of juxtaposed and overlapping figures reminiscent of vegetal and cellular motifs. Ultimately the images are abstract, but they appear to be in motion, energized by a depth and precision that leaves them virtually animate. This intimation of activity combined with Cebular’s use of vibrant color causes select forms to show vividly against a darker background, suggesting a sense of playfulness and optimism. As Cebular states, her works underscore “the joy that colors and forms may evoke.”

Originally from Croatia, Renata Cebular lives and works in Regensdorf near Zurich, Switzerland.

Artist Statement

From early childhood I developed a propensity to modify my environment by adding beauty, colours and shape to everyday objects. I remember as a child drawing everything around me, trying to bring it to life on paper and embellishing it. I therefore cultivated a love for detail and the intimate wish to express the complexity and the diversity of nature. My free hand swing became the foundation of my drawing technique, and the gentle, harmonious lines crossing and meeting each other in different patterns contributed to characterizing my particular style. I discovered the possibilities in simplicity. I work without templates, sketches, or aids. My artwork comes to life in the timelessness and harmony of the moment; patterns and shapes, colours and lines flow into each other to form a holistic meaning, get their place and vibrancy, find chaos and order, so that they are brought together and made into a whole.
