Offer Goldfarb

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Using photography to create striking, painterly images, Offer Goldfarb is a minimalist autodidactic photographer who aims in his work for abstraction.  His fascinating photographs play with the mind--are these real places and scenarios or have they been superimposed, added, subtracted?  Goldfarb pushes as far away as he can from the photorealistic image as seen through the camera lens, yet leaves the essence of the original.  There is a surrealist aspect to his compositions–tiny figures, barely visible as anything other than red pinpricks scale monumental white planes which melt, shimmering into the heat-haze of his background.  His minimalist roots ring true–the elegant lines and use of black, white and enormous swathes of translucent white are the most striking aspect of his images–it is this that lends them their strength and beauty.  Such is their quality, their softness and otherworldly character that they have often been mistaken for paintings. Most recently, he was the recipient of an award in excellence from Black and White magazine.

Offer Goldfarb was born in Israel and currently lives and teaches in Tel Aviv.

Artist Statement

I regard photography as a mirror, reflecting my inner world. I am interested in the visual language shared by all visual artists. I search for abstract and minimalism. Abstract, for me, is getting further from the thing itself, but always leaving a hint of life. As for my idea of minimalism, less is impossible and more is redundant. Similar to Japanese tradition, my work says a lot in a few words.  My photographs are often mistaken for paintings. My inspiration is derived and influenced by painters (Morandi) and photographers (Sugimoto).
