Naveed Hakim

Elements of Abstraction
June 4 - June 25, 2010 Reception: Thursday June 10, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Naveed Hakim’s oil paintings reflect the artist’s own distinct blend of the post-WWII abstract expressionist aesthetic and contemporary third world graffiti art, utilizing a rich tradition of arabesque oriental calligraphic imagery. Hakim applies backdrops of browns, greens, and off-whites to his canvases in order to recreate the walls that support the graffiti from which he draws inspiration. His abstract lines and calligraphic motifs range from bright aqua hues to varying degrees of violet and gray, from saturated green shades to rich crimson and earth tones, and everything in between. His copious and energetic application of oil paint recalls the impasto-driven aesthetic of the Venetian school, particularly the later works of Titian. Hakim’s loaded brush creates a narrative across the canvas, starting from robust and tangible strokes and ending with thin streaks that seem unwilling to cease.

Furthermore, the expressive treatment of paint enables the casual spectator to grasp his otherwise esoteric imagery. Through his art, he captures his distinct curiosities and concepts and catalyzes their interaction within the boundaries of the canvas.

Artist Statement

A synthesis of disparate and fragmented ideas often possess a poetic connectedness that enables them to develop a compelling tendency so often seen in great works of art. The force that draws these often fragile and displaced moments to extend beyond their individual universe into a collective argument, akin to the human condition, is the creative instinct of the artist, who must fight his own inclinations and allow all occurrences to mature and evolve on their own disturbing terms. This is my intent, to construct a vernacular that reflects my curiosities, nurtured by a keen interest in twentieth century art that also provides a vehicle to transcend the predictable. The thread that loosely ties these self exploratory works is barely visible but remains profoundly present in the grammar and language that takes its roots from the schools of the Abstract Expressionists and the Venetian painters in particular.
