Miyooon

Matrix of the Mind: Contemporary Fine Art by Japanese Artists
February 26 - March 19, 2010 Reception: Thursday March 4, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

The singular creations of Miyooon, a Japanese multimedia artist, arise from the concept that everything is composed of cells. “The world is made of cells,” he writes. “They are everywhere—inside our universe, our Earth, inside society, happiness, destiny and desire.” What makes Miyooon’s work unique is that he takes cells, entities normally invisible to the naked eye, and renders them in acrylic at a macro scale, undulating ameba-like forms merging, dividing, replicating, generating a world of their own on the two-dimensional surface. These “Cell Works,” as the artist calls them, are generally abstract yet organic in nature, suggesting the outlines of human or animal subjects. Overall, Miyooon’s paintings are intentionally optimistic; indeed, the artist strives for his cells to “infect all of the Earth with love and fun.”

Miyooon’s work has been exhibited throughout Japan and internationally. He currently works and resides in Tokyo.

Artist Statement

My approach and focus in creating art is based around the idea that everything in the world, including ourselves, is made of cells. They come in many forms, all the colors of the rainbow, with their own words and sounds. They are constantly in flux, moving, changing, exchanging places and in doing so they show us their many expressions and emotions, a reflection of ourselves. They struggle and shift within Time, as we do. My work as an artist to is to capture them in that split second and mount them on canvas or using other materials, to express their eternal dance of growth and decline.
