Milt Masur

Portals of Perception
March 23 - April 13, 2010 Reception: Thursday March 25, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Milt Masur tailors a unique approach to create each of his enchanting art works, using enamel, oil, or mixed media. Travel has left an indelible mark upon Masur as he whisks his audience away to far-flung settings of beaches, mountain vistas, bubbling rivers, endless desert landscapes, and serene woodlands. His style is a hybrid of figurativism and impressions from the scene, with an occasional bow to abstraction; in this manner he explores both the visual and spiritual aspects of a locale. Masur infuses his painting with energy, using a bold natural palette rife with azure skies paired with the brilliant hues of plant life. His work with enamels displays an artist fascinated by the qualities of texture. Masur captures the sheen of moving water and gently swirling reeds by building the surface with layer after layer of color. He says "I find that sculptural effects impart powerful delineation and identity with the subject." The effect is mesmerizing, pulling our eyes around the picture plane and into his beautiful world.

Masur lives and works on Long Island, New York.

Artist Statement

I think creativity is a physiological part of human nature. Creativity constantly re-shapes our perception of our outer environment, interacting with our inner selves. In particular, visual art unites these interactions by capturing a meaningful moment in time.         After trying sculpting and painting, my art evolved into combining these with collage elements: I paint figurative bas reliefs/collages with impressionistic and expressionistic elements. The effect is the delineation and empowerment of the subject, the third dimension adding a sense of identity. Some paintings, impervious to weather, can be displayed outdoors, providing an extra opportunity for external interaction.         I want to share my reactions of awe and power when viewing the subjects I paint. I feel that our society too often prefers sensationalism, nihilism, solipsism and excessive commercialism to appreciation of the beauty and dignity of nature and life.
