The Odyssey Within
December 15 - January 5, 2010 Reception: Thursday December 17, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Sculptor and mixed-media artist Marialuisa Sponga has always been involved in the world of design and textiles. Her early work in tapestries and artistic weaving laid the groundwork for her constantly evolving projects exploring the nature of the textures in the visual arts. The result has been an eclectic range of work which is stunning both for its sheer beauty as well as its innovation and daring. Her work is primarily abstract but she has pushed the envelope and straddled the line between the figurative and pure design. In doing so, she reveals the universal forms that surround us, both the organic and the urban.

Marialuisa has said that she considers her work to be her personal visual language, an idea made boldly clear in her unique choices in material, colors and form, as well as the manner in which her work dynamically blurs the conventional distinctions between sculpture and pure visual art. Marialuisa Sponga has shown her work in galleries and museums and through competitions extensively throughout Europe, Japan, China, Australia,California and Texas.

Artist Statement

My creative work stems from the world of architecture, having been an editorial co-ordinator for architect magazines.  As an assistant to my husband, a professional photographer of architecture and art, with the SPONGAdiffusione, 1972/92, I followed the creation and realization of textiles. This past experience helped stimulate my imagination and the desire to explore and experiment with textile materials in order to create new textures. It was my encounter with Marina Giannangeli, architect and textile designer, 1990/94, which brought about a turning point towards a new direction: a casual and rational use of the most diverse kinds of flexible materials, creating three-dimensional works made with different materials. My continuous encounter with modern art over the years has allowed me to build up an entirely personal language. I am frequently invited to national and international exhibitions and symposiums. My works are also part of public and private collections.
