Maria Laura Pini

The Latin American Art Exhibition
September 8 - September 29, 2009 Reception: Thursday September 10, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Argentinean artist, Maria Laura Pini, creates a unique and unforgettable arts experience with her intricately carved wood scenes with figures and animals that intertwine and react with one another. She is greatly inventive in her subject and composition, delving into the depths of the emotions and motivations of humanity and in particular, most recently, the issues and themes of womanhood. Pini infuses each character with distinctive personality. You never know what to expect from Pini, as she playfully explores a variety of concepts and different media including metal, clay, paint and fabrics. “My restless soul enjoys wandering about life in search of new experiences,” she explains. “I have recently discovered in wood, like an enthusiastic ‘Geppetto,’ the way to make countless characters come to life and tell their own stories.” Her characters exude distinctive personalities, and there is always a narrative to explore.

Maria Laura Pini’s career in the arts has been gaining momentum as she exhibits frequently around Buenos Aires and recently gained representation in New York.

Artist Statement

Black pencils and other drawing elements engage in a graceful “pas de deux” and glide and float on a paper stage telling stories without words. A sudden and abrupt change follows to achieve accuracy through extremely precise cuttings, which will irreversibly give birth to my work of art. Creativity, freshness and an original way of telling, invite the spectator to watch.
