Luca Bracali

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Italian photographer Luca Bracali situates his work in the tradition of 15th century Renaissance painting, something strongly apparent in both his compositions and color palettes and his subtle way of guiding our eyes towards subjects’ faces and sources of light. An intrepid adventurer who has photographed over 120 countries, Bracali deploys a consistent aesthetic across his incredibly rich and varied subjects and landscapes. His images are always organized slightly off-center, with strong diagonals, bold colors and sharp focus, pulling our attention into the space of the picture.

Whether photographing bustling city streets or an individual figure working in a field, a calm river at sunrise or a jungle bursting into flames, Bracali is able to capture with an uncanny tactility the feeling of the moment. Every color and texture transports the viewer around the world with each new image, from sweaty tropical forests to arid deserts and the cutting arctic cold. Bracali’s eyes and lens offer a vision of the natural world in all its infinite beauty.

Artist Statement

The great Masters of Renaissance, especially Caravaggio, have had great influence in my artistic career as a photographer. At six I shot my first black & white image, at fourteen years old I experienced the darkroom and infrared photography. For over ten years, as a special correspondent, I was committed to sport photography, developing a strong “carpe diem” feeling, sharpening a panning shooting technique and the usage of super telephoto lenses. From color slides I turned into digital photography, and from Formula 1 races I jumped into the most extreme and uncontaminated places of our Planet throughout 120 countries. I love shooting the Earth’s beauties and people in the most natural way, without the addition of filters or photo-retouch, trying to emphasize shapes and profiles and handle all the power of light and colors. Traveling is my life’s duty. Transferring my emotions to someone else is my real mission.
