In Jane Sandes’ sculptures, geometry becomes lithe and kinetic. The crystalline sheen of her resin forms captures nature’s elasticity, making her sculptures look as though they are transforming before our eyes. Light bounces off her objects’ surfaces, and clear, lustrous colors accent their reflective physiques. Yet Sandes’ work evokes urbanity as well as nature, suggesting that the geometric sturdiness of man-made cities is simply a variation on themes the earth provides.
Influenced by the shores, gems, rivers and climate of Brazil’s Northeastern region, and by the structure of her native city, Fortaleza, Sandes has brought her intimate experiences with form into dialogue with Modern sculpture. She is not interested in mimicking nature or architecture; rather, she transforms what she observes into exquisitely dynamic visual moments. Sandes has exhibited internationally since the late 1970s, and has won numerous awards, including the Unifor Plástica award in painting. She lives and works in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil.
