Gustavo Rasso

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Gustavo Rasso's study of Byzantine iconography has deeply influenced his current work of digital portraits. He often focuses on well-known historical figures, yet he tweaks the imagery and adds textures and visual effects that at times lend a surreal quality to these portraits. There is never a sense of distortion in these images, however; rather, the personality of his subject comes through, their character retained, since he uses the subject itself as his inspiration for his digital enhancements.

Gustavo has said that his digital paintings are the melding of
a classical vision of painting with the infinite possibilities provided to the artist by digital technology. In an age when icons from the worlds of entertainment, advertising and sports are all around us, Gustavo has distilled the idea of the artistic portrait down to its essence. He brings forth the emotional resonance of portraiture, so that we see his subjects intimately and anew.

Artist Statement

Originally, all of my artistic formation was classic but, in 2005, a fundamental change occurred: I discovered the computer as a media of artistic expression. From that moment on I have dedicated myself completely to its study and experimentation. An essential part of my life was my youthful experience of being a professional actor of theater, television, film and radio. This unusual experience marked my sensibility and gave me a versatility of expression that later appeared in my paintings. I am a pop artist whose voice is characterized by a multiplicity of themes and styles. My digital paintings are the result of a classical vision of painting wrapped in an infinity of possibilities that only the digital universe can provide for me.
