The French Perspective: Contemporary Art from France
June 29 - July 20, 2010 Reception: Thursday July 1, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Award winning artist Gabrielle uses her intuition and inquisitive nature to probe deeply into individual consciousness. Her insightful paintings explore a variety of human conditions in a consistently expressive and thought-provoking manner. The figures that inhabit her work interact with the world in a most visceral way; we find individuals in the clutches of despair or at the height of ecstasy. “There is always a principal character, which shares its body with others,” she explains. “That's a way to distort that body, to dissect feelings, to objectify the human being.” The poses are key to the interpretation of a piece and are often exceptionally graceful. Her brushwork is loose and tactile, pairing well with her appreciation for the influence of color over the audience’s mood. Gabrielle crafts breathtaking landscapes to form a dramatic backdrop or merely peek through parts of the picture plane.

Though she began showing work only in recent years, the art world has responded with much acclaim. Gabrielle resides in Lens, France.

Artist Statement

My work is  a permanent study of humankind. I watch without any sense of judgment and then I just paint on a canvas the feelings I had while observing, or the emotions raised by other human beings. I'm a very intuitive person who likes to model bodies and play with them, sometimes up to distortion. I like the tactile side. I test bodies without ever taking away their sensuality. It's not only the shape of a person that will catch my attention but what is hidden under the body. In my paintings, there is always a principal character, which shares its body with others. That's a way to distort that body, to dissect feelings, to objectify the human-being. I think this, along with my life experiences, is the source of the strength viewers sometimes notice in my work, that can be transmitted to the audience.
