Press Release
From a distance, Fulvio Biancatelli’s creations could be forests, with their canopies of line and light. As his metallic visions come into focus, however, one finds a harsher reality of iron and steel. Yet the initial impression carries over into the work, and within the aesthetic balance of Biancatelli’s constructed realities one finds an organic structural fluidity, a poetic appreciation for the decay and change brought by the passage of time. Linear expressions emerge from the abstraction of these compositions, offset by shifting clouds of sprayed pigments and the dappled oxidation of rust. Rebirth is a recurring theme in Biancatelli’s works, as is a powerful strength and fury. Working in a broad range of mediums and styles the artist creates his works with an impulsive freedom. His more recent mixed media sculptural reliefs are built from metal, plastic, and wood, contrasting the materials’ varied textural effects in elemental bands of space.
Born in the city of Rome, Italy where he currently lives and works, Fulvio Biancatelli has led a long and distinguished career in the arts.
Artist Statement
I work primarily with objects that I find when I walk around. These materials are often not obviously compatible with each other, so to get them to work together I must engage in the process of connection, which is at the heart of my art. This involves a continual, delicate balancing act because these materials are fluid but strong, and you need to give them confidence so that you have the possibility to change the positions and shapes before light and time solidify the transformation from chrysalis to butterfly. This requires skill, but it also means that the artist must be strong in themselves, never thinking of how impossible something in the process might appear to be. The result is a sincere trust between artist and material, a natural partnership of great value that can create wonders.
