Fernando Braune

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 24 - May 15, 2012 Reception: Thursday April 26, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Working at the edge of the delineation between tradition and contemporary art, Fernando Braune’s holistic practice in photography and mixed media aims to decontextualize the modern day realities constructed by the cultural, social and psychological tides of territory and belonging. Interested in triggering deeply held emotions and in wrenching viewers out of a ‘state of sleep,’ Braune treats his black and white photographs with watercolor, pastels, crayon and embroidery, all applied by hand. The image is then digitized and reinforced graphically and printed on paper, cloth canvas, plain fabric or paper. His inspiration comes from a number of sources, as you would expect for an artist who so consistently mixes styles and media to create something original and characteristically his own. Yet throughout he remains fascinated by people and their surroundings, an absorption that he shares with his audience.

Fernando Braune was born in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and currently lives in the city of Rio de Janeiro. He is the author of the books ‘The Surrealism and the Esthetic of Photography,’ ‘Temporalis’ and ‘Cinema and the Photographic Language.’

Artist Statement

My photographic work has always included people. Taking the natural color reality as the starting point, I have always tried to create a new reality by shooting in black and white and working with the images, so that the photographed people step into a different and new world, decontextualized from the reality they come from, one that is created by my cultural, social and psychological background. I use a balance of techniques, traditional and modern, creating an unusual result through a process I enjoy. My interest in art has been part of my life since childhood. I remember my father bringing home a different art magazine every week, and I used to look forward to Thursdays to know which universe I was going to dive into: Goya? Picasso? Monet? Da Vinci? Gauguin? Van Gogh? That air of mystery and magic stays with me still, and plays its role in my works.
