Férial

The French Perspective: Contemporary Art from France
June 29 - July 20, 2010 Reception: Thursday July 1, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

French artist and graphic designer Férial crafts elaborate, seductive, cinematic narratives out of watercolor, pencil and pastel compositions that recall the size and scope of film frames and vintage illustrated posters. Each work combines one or more human figures rendered in a lush, stylized impressionist manner that evokes Art Nouveau and comic book aesthetics, inhabiting some dramatic, mysterious setting: iconic Midwestern railroads, ambiguous cobblestone roads, urban street corners. Férial deploys colors, facial expressions and sensual cues – rain, bubbles, fire, snow, wind – to give each work a distinct and enveloping emotional weight.

Born in Algeria, based in the South of France and strongly influenced by American beat culture (especially authors like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, whose words appear repeatedly), Férial’s characters and their surroundings create a sense of restlessness, adventure, ambition, protest and beautiful introspection. Incorporating excerpts from songs and poems doesn’t limit the appeal of her work, but suggests other trajectories, possible alternate routes on the stunning journey that each composition offers.

Artist Statement

My work has been heavily influenced by the generation of American artists between 1950-1970 who believed in another world, in the hope of transforming life into something better. Through them and their period which has become mythical, an artistic golden age when the key words were liberty, revolt and unbelievable dreams, I express my own visions of today's world. Within that I include references to their ardor, building on their dreams and the sense of escape and wide open spaces I associate with them. My imagination is fed by the works of Jack Kerouac, John Fante, William S. Burroughs, as well as Jim Harrison, Bob Dylan and Hubert Selby junior; legendary men, founders of a true artistic movement with a thundering message. Another philosophy of life is possible... a different world is possible!
