Eul Hurley

The Manifestation of Milieu
June 12 - July 3, 2012 Reception: Thursday June 14, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Finding a unique visual appeal and dialog that stems from his personal vision of the world, Eul Hurley creates narratively charged works which are based in the realm of imagination, finding the extraordinary within the everyday. He creates worlds that draw the viewer into the new perspective laid out before them, yet avoids focusing too narrowly on representation. Elements of surrealism occasionally characterize the works, contributing to the artist’s exploration of the contradictions of life. As he works in oils on canvas and linen with occasional elements of collage, Eul develops an expressive and detail-driven realism built in thick, glossy movements of paint. His mark is choppy and deliberate, sculpting his imagery across the surface with broad strokes like that of a palette knife.

Born in Boston, MA, Eul studied at the Massachusetts College of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Boston. Now living in Los Angeles, his works have appeared in exhibits, publications, and private collections on both coasts of the United States.

Artist Statement

My artworks are animations of sweeping impasto brushstrokes, creating a surface of tension, a paradox of visual emotions and concerns. They create forms that facilitate depth and uncanny synthesis within the compositions: strong forms, bending edges, and expressive discordant surfaces; narratives captivating, scintillating, and conjuring heightened emotions. I explore life’s contradictions, realities and bare emotions. Often my themes are combinations of mundane objects, juxtaposed in whimsical scenario but formally unified with adherence to form and shape. A surreal quality surfaces suggesting notions of agitation and motion, with the materials and processes consistently linked by recurring formal concerns and subject matter. Mine is a pictorial style with the focus not on objective representation but on a personalized imagery that expresses emotions and impressionability.
