Ermeti Martina

The Odyssey Within: an Exhibition of Fine Art by Greek and Italian Artists
December 23 - January 12, 2012 Reception: Thursday December 29, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Ermeti Martina’s ornate portraiture presents the viewer with impressionistic renderings of the female form. Done in acrylic on wood, Martina’s larger-than-life subjects wear bold personas – that of pin up, muse, geisha, glamour girl or shadowy seductress. Mischievous and dramatic, each portrait offers a superb portrayal of the intricacy of posture and subtle flow of sensuality manifest in the female form as virtuous landscape. Equal parts high fashion spread and dreamscape, the figures demonstrate in vivid color the expressive and diverse modes of female bodily intellect. Tilting curves, pursed lips and impetuous eyes pop out against hot red backgrounds alternatively atmospheric and opaque. In the style of great masters such as Schiele and Klimt, Martina’s simmering visions possess an airy depth of field counterbalanced by decorative enhancements in the frame including chains, roses, glitter and collage.

Ermeti Martina was born in Rimini, Italy. Schooled in painting and design, she considers her travels in Spain as having an important influence on her work.

Artist Statement

"Drawing is the honesty of art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad." (~S.  Dali) My work does not follow a quest for beauty, as was common in the past, but rather seeks to balance aesthetics, shapes and colors, giving importance to a simple frame that becomes an integral part of the picture. The theme of my recent paintings is the world as it is for women. I develop the representation of the female figure, interpreted according to my own style, and provide a kind of figurative  summary, following the influence of great masters such as Schiele  and  Klimt. These works are mainly acrylic on wood, with decorative elements in the frame such as chains, roses, glitter and collage.
