Dan OBANA

Matrix of the Mind: Contemporary Fine Art by Japanese Artists
February 26 - March 19, 2010 Reception: Thursday March 4, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Dan Obana's digital arrays of imagery are multilayered pieces that make use of cultural references and a multitude of varied textures to create striking and highly original dreamscapes. As Dan constructs his works, he plays with size and scale, and arranges his images according to a variety of styles: he is equally comfortable in both loose and dense compositions. Like the mechanisms of memory, these works rearrange the chaos of raw sensory experience into highly original patterns. He appropriates images and invites the viewer visually to plunge right in and explore. Dan's work, then, is as much about the process as it is about the finished product. These pieces invoke classical as well as contemporary forms to create sometimes dizzying abstractions and fantasy portraits, yet works that are always engaging.

Dan Obana's image manipulation is highly conceptual but also rooted in the very tactility of life and memory; the viewer who explores his work is rewarded by the challenging yet startlingly beautiful compositions.

Artist Statement

Art evolves partly through the use of tools which arise that are suited to the age. As such, I am sure that digital technique will play an important role in inventing a new art in modern times. The process of creating original artwork on the computer requires, in my case, multiple-layer manipulations. In my artwork, about fifty layers are combined, processed and manipulated; accordingly, I give my artworks the name of "Digital-HANGA", “HANGA” being traditional Japanese block print. Improving my level of technical skill and the constant evolution of sensitivity, deep thinking and feeling within me are constant goals. I want to absorb and understand the characteristics of both digital and non-digital techniques, so that I can create work that expresses a sense of our modern era and develop art by using the new possibilities opened up to us through the use of digital media.
