Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 24 - May 15, 2012 Reception: Thursday April 26, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

With a sharp eye for the crisp, the pristine and the exquisite, Italian photographer Corrado Maggi delicately and expertly shoots ephemeral moments of beauty in everyday life. A self-taught artist, Maggi gained his artistry through organic, passionate study of the world around him, as well as by learning from the example of professional photographers. “I love art in general and the observation, the study of photographs of the great photographers of the past,” he says.

Through his works, he seeks to temper the fervor of his soul with the meticulousness of his rational self. The result is that the viewer is taken on a voyage through the fluctuation and tenacity of the human imagination. Vivacious, saturated colors are boldly met by velvety blacks and whites, and tell a story that is at once tangibly human and poignantly whimsical. Maggi is avidly dedicated to continued observation of life and master photographers, a fact which shows through his evocative glimpses into resonance and which inspires his marvelously appealing images.

Artist Statement

I have worked in photography for many years, participating in various national and international competitions. I am self-taught, learning from books, magazines and the advice of a professional photographer uncle. I love art, and there is a constant conflict within me between the artistic side of my personality and the rational part of me. I have found working in black and white more congenial to my tastes, and better able to express my mature perspective on the world and my own inner self. It allows me to express my passion for telling stories through an image. In my color work I always try to satisfy the pleasure of composition: I hide, remove, highlight particular, individual tones. I want to encourage the viewer to travel with their imagination, to reach for understanding. I am inspired by great photographers - Cartier Bresson, Erwitt, Ghirri, but especially by G. Berengo Gardin.
