December 16 - January 7, 2011 Reception: Thursday December 16, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Born in Egypt to an Armenian family, Chritch creates mixed media pieces with global appeal. Drawing from a wide range of different techniques, she combines symbolism, cubism and abstraction in her signature figural images that explore the masks that play such a large part in the way we construct the world around us. Chritch’s most recent “Foreign Faces” series reminds us that sharing a facial expression is often enough to allow us to discard the feelings of self and other that define so much of human relations.

For Chritch, the canvas is a space of free expression, where colors, shapes, and textures merge and give birth to recognizable forms situated in abstract compositions. This allows viewers to relate to her facial forms no matter their background. Chritch’s art invites us to look beyond the masks of appearance and decode the truth of a person, the complexity of all there is to be found in the human soul.

Chritch has been invited to exhibit her "Foreign Faces" collection during the 4th Abu Dhabi Film Festival from the 14th to 22nd October 2010 at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi.

Artist Statement

My Art is instinctive and my work, unplanned, begins directly on the canvas, which becomes a space of free expression where colours, shapes and thicknesses produce an abstract composition. The characters emerge from the composition, locating themselves dimensionally and influencing my palette, while music plays an important role in my inspiration. I enjoy using different techniques, including their combination that led me into mixed media for the past several years. I use fast-drying acrylic in successive transparent layers of glazes to give the desired effects of depth or light. My most recent “Foreign Faces” series suggests that sharing a facial expression is often enough to discard the feeling of being an alien in an increasingly individualistic and robotized world. The thin intersecting straight lines and figures with closed eyes are my signature.
