Press Release
Using the simple tools of ink on paper, Christine Magré creates images that capture exquisite visual arias of color and form. In these moments of spontaneous expression, her forms are graceful and her colors bright against the stark white background. Informed by Eastern art techniques, particularly Chinese watercolor and also calligraphy, Magré’s shapes seem almost to dance off the paper. In her technique, she uses the transparency of black and color inks to her advantage as she superimposes them one on top of the other, accomplishing an immense spectrum of color and a vivid impression of relief or depth. She calls her method intuitive action painting, and what she achieves are forms both exquisite and impulsive, brought to life by a sense of movement and purpose.
Working in her native France, Magré’s approach is certainly minimalist. But within these narrow parameters, she is able to achieve a commanding depth of vitality and passion. In the end, Magre’s images yield a powerful glimpse into the potentials and mysteries of expressive form.
Artist Statement
For my painting, I use both black and color inks. I especially like watercolor paper, either ribbed or satin. My tools are varied and what I use depends on the size of the work and the desired effect. I work flat on a table. Inspiration is not intellectual. I paint what I feel. I am fortunate to have an intuition for spontaneous gesture. I take real pleasure in and feel great enthusiasm for facing a blank sheet, so that I can let go, greet the moment and bring it to a conclusion. I love to watch viewers examining my work, and see them relax and enjoy them, feel a sense of healing from what I have created.
