Press Release
Bergen Rose paints with an eye towards sweeping landscape, narrative interest and a touch of Surrealism. Her landscapes are filled with sky and light; there is a Turner-esque quality about the grandeur of her open skies. In contrast to the enormity of the sky, there is equally interesting detail in all of Rose's paintings that draws the eye towards a small object such as a bird, boat or flower. Rose states that she is inspired by "the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi – simple, random, irregular and imperfect beauty." This is evident in her inclusion of small details, located randomly and naturally on her canvases. The paintings present an emotionally charged landscape, as well as a quirky beauty all their own. Bergen Rose has been exhibiting her work for over twenty years throughout the United States. Her work is in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Museum. She lives and works on Whidbey Island, Washington.
