Artyom Shulga

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

The unique and original works of Russian artist Artyom Shulga speak of playfulness and delight. Despite portraying a moment frozen in time, Shulga’s photographic images are marked by movement, swirling fields of light and vibrant color that highlight and alter his human subjects. Color, for Shulga, “has enormous value for the spectator,” largely as an indicator of mood, emotional state, and psychological feeling. In combination with the ever-present sense of motion, the use of effervescent tones and metallic paper creates an energy that electrifies Shulga’s photographs, evoking sentiments such as joy, exuberance, and liveliness. These works are fully designed, conceived and composed to radiate these positive qualities, offering the viewer an alternate world infused with hope.

Born in Barnaul, in the Altaian District of Russia, Artyom Shulga studied clothing design, photography, and videography in Odessa and Kiev. This artistic training reveals itself in Shulga’s mixed-media work, producing intriguing and complex creations.

Artist Statement

Photography is more than a profession or fascination for me, it tightens my observations and experiences and immerses me in the moment. It gives me the possibility of being involved with the world, and of participating in the process of creation through a spiritual connection with my environment. The results are an expression of reality through my own experiences and attitudes. Crucial to this is the matter of color, which is vital in the presentation of moods which are so important when capturing a moment in time. I use color to convey my own emotions and to give a sense of the atmosphere of the moment to the audience.
