Aga Cela

Angelika ClassenAngelika Classen
German painter Aga Cela’s oil portraits have a magical air that imbues fragments of lives and spaces with an engrossing grandeur. Her soft, dramatic impressionist style evokes Vienna Secession painters, and Toulouse Lautrec’s nightlife scenes. Aga Cela, a high school teacher who holds regular exhibitions with her painter husband, uncannily conveys the mood and temperament of her sitters. She crafts gentle, sensitive facial expressions out of densely applied paints, leading our eyes towards subjects with a clever sense for geometry and composition.

Aga Cela organizes hard lines, bold colors and competing figures in the scene so that they all become complementary to the central figure. Whether draped in bright greens and pinks, or austere blacks against an orange backdrop, each portrait turns the surrounding space into another expression of the sitter’s persona: disorienting mise-en-scene gives an air of whimsy; tight frames create an introspective space; horizontal compositions dominated by dark tones suggest resigned contemplation. In these moving portraits, Aga Cela turns the entire space into an expression of interiority.
