Vladimir RusinovVladimir Rusinov

Vladimir Rusinov creates fantastical sculptures carved in wood in a highly traditional, yet dynamic and relevant style. This is in part a testament to his education in Moscow from the University of Folk Arts. Far removed from the traditional religious scenes or icons that are common to the Orthodox Church, Rusinov recreates scenes that owe more to (and sometimes depict) scenes from classical mythology. The carvings, though not always large, are epic in their level of detail and scope of vision. Beautifully realized and in exquisite detail, there is a strong narrative thread to his works. He shows an intimate knowledge of the Old Masters and their works, paying homage to them and reworking some of their most famous images.

The wood lends Rusinov’s sculptures a wonderful warmth and depth that is hard to reproduce in any other material, but most of all it shows most evidently the care and attention of an expert craftsman. Vladimir Rusinov lives and works in his native Ukraine.
