The delightfully effervescent abstract paintings of the Switzerland-based Italian artist Virgi Dall'Aglio have an irrepressible, catchy, musical quality. She occasionally works with broad ranges of colors and styles of applications, and elsewhere pares down her aesthetic to a more arresting combination of two hues on white, one applied lightly, the other with a wide, dripping brush. In both cases the alternation of clean, straight lines and twisting, expressive swaths suggests not only the measures and movements of musical notation, but also the footsteps and tracks of dancers progressing across an open floor.
Looking at Virgi’s acrylic compositions becomes tantamount to performing a kind of waltz with our eyes as they follow the swooping, caressing, intersecting and overlapping lines that mark each work. It’s an engrossing project, and one easily becomes absorbed in the gentle arcs and dizzying zigzags of any painting, discovering, in the process, the over-arching balance of color fields and sharp vertical dividers. Virgi Dall'Aglio invites us to dance between hard lines and playful loops.
