Texture, color, and depth—these elements define the works of the Italian artist Vera Occhetti. Midway through life, Occhetti began to paint, an activity than now reflects her very being. “Painting,” Occhetti asserts,” is like a spiritual journey. It is moving towards a tomorrow, towards something, towards a search you know will never end.” The titles of her works build on this notion, referring to seasons—summer, winter, fall—or days of the week, moments that are specific yet recurring, concepts that are discrete yet continuous. The works themselves are seemingly simple, featuring one main color (often black) that foregrounds a second more lively tone such as yellow, red, green, or white. These hues, applied in layers with a spatula, project beyond the two-dimensional plane to create a depth that animates the canvas. The opposing colors blend in sculpted swirls, yet retain their separate identities, providing a rich and varied surface for the viewer to explore. These creations abstractly speak of the artist’s personal philosophy, and perhaps can serve as a metaphor for life in general, for the unexpected and exciting experiences that lie ahead. Vera Occhetti’s paintings have been exhibited throughout Italy and now, in New York City. She lives and works in Torino, Italy.
