Steven Dickey

Steven DickeySteven Dickey
The captivating sculptures of Steven Dickey, simultaneously abstract and representational, reflect the artist’s musical background as well as his training in realist art. Dickey begins with the form of a string instrument, traditionally crafted of wood, and reinterprets it in bronze to forge a work evocative of the vibrant and resonant music such instruments produce. Often, the body of the instrument appears abstracted, if not deconstructed, built up in places and eroded in others. The bridge, typically strong and hard-edged, acts as a centering device for the flowing, curvilinear masses that comprise the majority of the work. Dickey creates his sculpture as one would create music, conducting the juxtaposition of straight and rounded forms, alternately smooth and rough in texture and polished and matte in finish. The final composition offers an intriguing and exciting interpretation of the ways in which art and music may meet. Steven Dickey’s sculptures appear throughout the country in public and private arenas such as hospitals, corporate lobbies, parks, and harbors. Numerous newspaper and magazine articles have featured his work. Steven Dickey currently lives and works in Tampa, Florida.
