Seung Baick’s approach to social realism is vibrant and immediate. His paintings acknowledge the political, sociological truths that shape our world but they also take liberties, reveling in symbolism and envisioning what the world could look like. Colors as striking as Van Gogh’s and Gaugin’s are a constant in Baick’s work. Crisp geometric shapes merge with organic gestures, and images of nature coincide with pop culture. Baick sees art as existing in a social context and having a social impact, but he also recognizes art as an intrinsic force that emerges from individuals. The extrinsic and intrinsic dance in and out of each other in Baick’s paintings, making conscious and subconscious seem harmoniously intertwined.
Originally from Korea, Seung Baick studied at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and also holds a Master’s in Theology from Emory University and a PhD from Mid-America Baptist Seminary. He teaches Biblical Studies in Atlanta, where he lives and works.
