Through brushwork that is both vigorous and gentle, Satomi Nishino vividly conveys the pain and fragility of her subjects through close-up portraits of their expressive faces. Her subjects at times appear scarred by their experiences, as tones and textures collide and jostle for space like a maelstrom of emotions. Their eyes often convey a sense of mourning, yet expressions of defiance as well, and the human spirit’s instinct to carry on, despite real-world obstacles.
This conflict between the subjective inner world and objective reality is key to Satomi’s work, as she strives to express a body/mind dynamic and a sense of alienation from the world. These paintings richly convey the stress and strangeness of existence as well as the endless possibilities for reinventing oneself. The faces are too raw and complex to be masks. Satomi invests them with deeply felt pathos, making them a conglomeration of psychological states which might be rearranged, like the pieces of a puzzle.
