Whether in sharp still lifes, scintillating landscapes, or impressionistic nudes and portraits, the subject of Pedro Garcia Socorro’s oil paintings never changes. Each image, no matter how intimate or sprawling, is brought to life and given texture by the spectacular light that floods in and across the picture plane. Luminosity activates every surface and space in Socorro’s sensitive work, from glassy waters to snowy hillsides, or the tangled fabrics of a bed sheet. By freezing these fleeting moments and conveying their booming immediacy, he accentuates the captivating delicacy of the everyday.
“For me,” he writes, “those very moments of reflection preceding action are the ones that contain the substance of life.” That sensitivity to poise and potential is everywhere apparent in the Cuban-American, New Jersey-based artist’s work. Some canvases are filled with lush colors, while others are dominated by only a few browns, blues and off-whites, but in every case Socorro crafts an uncanny stillness that is never static, but rather abuzz with possibility.
